Washington’s economy ranks first in nationwide report

In a nationwide report on state economies, Washington ranks first out of all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Visual Capitalist recently created an infographic comparing state economies based on a 2017 study from WalletHub. The study ranks the economic activity, economic health, and innovation potential of each individual state. Overall, the evaluation includes 27 metrics from agencies like the U.S. Census Bureau and the Bureau of Labor Statistics to inform its rankings.

In terms of economic activity, Washington ranks #1 in the United States. Economic activity includes measurements of GDP growth, exports per capita, and startup activity in the state. According to the report, Washington’s first ranking is driven by productivity from Boeing, Amazon, and Microsoft.

For economic health, which includes measurements of unemployment rates, median household income, share of population living in poverty, and education, Washington ranks 4th. Washington also sits at #3 in terms of innovation potential which includes the number of jobs in STEM and high-tech industries, inventor patents, and the amount of R&D investment.

Washington ranks first in terms of highest GDP growth and most exports per capita, and ranks in the top five for highest change in nonfarm payrolls, and highest percent of jobs in the high-tech industry.

Other top-ranking states include California, Utah, and Massachusetts. Ranking at the bottom are Mississippi, Louisiana, and West Virginia.
