State Audits Find Significant Deficiencies

Washington State Auditor Brian Sonntag

On Monday the Washington State Auditor’s Office released another batch of audits.   The Puget Sound Regional Council was found out of compliance on three different counts, including a failure  to follow-up on federal grant funds awarded to other entities.  “Four payment requests totaling $257,746 did not include adequate documentation to demonstrate that the costs were allowable.  In addition, the Council did not review any grant-related documentation at the subrecipient’s location.”

Another audit found that the Spokane Housing Authority was making too making mistakes in determining whether applicants were eligible for rent subsidies.  Specifically, errors were found in the calculation of family incomes.  This resulted in overpayments estimated at $37,109 and underpayments of $21,484 for the year.

The Auditor found that both the City of Buckley and the Grays Harbor County Pacific Mountain Workforce Development Council had several deficiencies in internal controls that represented a material or significant deficiency in the controls over financial reporting.  “These deficiencies in internal controls make it reasonably possible that more serious misstatements or irregularities could occur and not be prevented or detected” by the City and Council in the future.

All these entities agreed to make necessary changes.
