State Representative Kristine Reeves (D-Federal Way) was honored this past weekend for work supporting veterans and their families in her role as a state lawmaker. The Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs and the Governor’s Veterans Advisory Committee chose Reeves to receive the 2017 Outstanding Service to Veterans – Legislator of the Year Award.
Reeves spent her freshman session in Olympia fighting for military service members, veterans, and their families by sponsoring and co-sponsoring legislation to improve transition services, increase higher education assistance, provide federal earned services to rural areas, and increase privacy for Gold Star family members. As her most significant legislative accomplishment in 2017, Reeves passed the Wounded Warrior Shared Leave Act, a new program that gives state employees who are veterans or a spouse of a veteran access to a shared leave pool during the traditional probation period, when leave isn’t awarded.
“I come from a military family and know the sacrifices they make. It is an honor to be an advocate for military families and veterans in Olympia,” said Reeves. “It will always be my top priority to make sure our service members, veterans, and their families have the access to services they have earned.”
