Join the Washington State Wire as we host a virtual conversation between legislative Republicans on the 2021 session.

While Democrats had a strong session, there were several historic pieces of bipartisan legislation – such as the Working Families Tax Exemption and overtime protections for farmworkers – that Republicans played a leading role in crafting. To do that, Republican leaders said they focused on building “philosophical majorities across the aisle.” They think the path to wining back the majority runs through the suburbs, where they plan to message around family wage jobs, education funding and a sustainable budget.

In this virtual conversation with members of Republican leadership, we will recap what happened during the session from the perspective of the minority and what they will be focused on during the interim.

Senator John Braun was first elected to the Washington State Senate in 2012 to represent Southwest Washington’s 20th Legislative District, which includes most of Cowlitz and Lewis counties along with parts of Clark and Thurston. Sen. Braun is leader of the Senate Republican Caucus and a member of the Senate Ways & Means Committee and the Labor, Commerce & Tribal Affairs Committee.

Representative J.T. Wilcox grew up on his family farm in rural Pierce County, where he still lives today. In 2011, he was sworn in as state representative for the 2nd Legislative District, which includes a number of small towns in Pierce and Thurston counties. Rep. Wilcox currently serves as House Republican Leader. His legislative priorities include providing a quality education for children, crafting a sustainable state budget, and helping find sustainable solutions for homelessness, addiction and hopelessness

Sen. Shelly Short was appointed to succeed former Sen. Brian Dansel. She went on to overwhelmingly win the 2017 special election for the district’s Senate seat. In 2018, she was re-elected to serve another four year term in the Senate. She serves as Ranking Member of the Senate Local Government Committee and sits on the Senate Agriculture, Water, Natural Resources & Parks, Environment, Energy & Technology and Rules Committees. She is also a member of the Joint Legislative Audit & Review Committee and Western Legislative Forestry Task Force, which are both separate from the Senate Committees.

Rep. Jacquelin Maycumber was appointed to her 7th District seat in 2017 by county commissioners from five counties and then elected by voters in a November 2017 special election. Her district includes Ferry, Pend Oreille and Stevens counties and parts of Okanogan and Spokane counties. She currently serves as the House Republican Floor Leader.
