Event of the Season!

23-Year Engagement Culminates in Ceremony on House Floor

Megan and Zack, at long last: Everyone who was anyone was there. (Louie Balukoff photo.)

It was the event everyone had been waiting for, for oh, something like 23 years now, and finally, on Saturday night, in a rare ceremony in the state House, Megan Walsh tied the knot with Zack Smith. Every seat on the floor was filled, and the galleries were packed. Smith and Walsh are well-known figures among the Capitol crowd. Walsh, originally of Walla Walla, is administrative assistant to state Rep. Sharon Wylie, D-Vancouver, and she worked for many years as administrative assistant to the late Majority Caucus Chair Bill Grant. Smith, meanwhile, is a tracker for the state Democratic party, and is son of Jeff Smith, formerly the Number-Two staffer for the state party during the long chairwomanship of the late Karen Marchioro. Participating in the ceremony were their two children, Vincent and Selena. Denny Heck, who officiated, joked that their 23-year “engagement” had lasted longer than most marriages. A reception followed under the Capitol Rotunda.

The crowd voted aye.
