Association of Washington Cities honors Sen. Sharon Brown with City Champion Award

The Association of Washington Cities (AWC), an Olympia-based organization advocating on behalf of Washington’s 281 cities and towns, honored Senator Sharon Brown (R-Kennewick) with a City Champion Award.

Brown was recognized on October 11 in Richland at an AWC Regional Meeting. She is one of eight legislators recognized for championing city issues during the 2017 legislative session. Specifically, Brown is recognized for her advocacy and leadership to help pass legislation that streamlines the administration of local business licensing, while ensuring cities maintain local control, and her work on local economic development tools.

“It’s an honor to present this award to Senator Brown,” said AWC Vice President and Kennewick Mayor Pro Tem Don Britain. “We recognize and applaud her leadership in business licensing and her support for local economic development tools.”

“We are so appreciative of the hard work and dedication that Senator Brown put into these business licensing issues in 2017,” said AWC Chief Executive Officer Peter King, “She is a champion for local authorities and tools for cities.”

“I am honored to receive this important recognition,” said Brown. “As a former Mayor Pro Tem for the City of Kennewick, I know the impact that the state Legislature can have on cities – both for better and for worse. I am a strong believer in economic development, streamlining government and local control. More importantly, it is my privilege to represent the people of the Tri-Cities, who share these priorities, in the state Senate. Thank you for this award. I look forward to continuing to work with cities for the betterment of the communities we represent.”

“AWC is proud to recognize a former Kennewick councilmember for her work in the Legislature to help make communities in her district and across the state prosper,” said King. “Cities need champions in the Legislature, like Senator Brown.”

City Champion Awards are a component of AWC’s Strong Cities, Great State campaign that brings cities and towns together to achieve greater results and deliver stronger services. This is the fourth year the City Champion Awards have been presented to select legislators.

The Association of Washington Cities serves its members through advocacy, education and services. Founded in 1933, AWC is a private, nonprofit, nonpartisan corporation that represents Washington’s cities and towns before the state legislature, the state executive branch, and with regulatory agencies. Membership is voluntary. However, AWC consistently maintains 100 percent participation from Washington’s 281 cities and towns. AWC also provides training, data and publications, and programs such as the AWC Employee Benefit Trust, AWC Risk Management Service Agency, AWC Workers’ Comp Retro, AWC Drug and Alcohol Consortium, and AWC GIS Consortium.
