Majority Leader Andy Billig’s statement on the resignation of Sen. Kevin Ranker

“Sen. Ranker informed me today that he has resigned from the Senate effective immediately. I want to thank Sen. Ranker for his service to the state and the 40th Legislative District.

“Because this remains an on-going investigation, I will wait to comment further until I have had the opportunity to read the investigator’s completed report on the allegations against Sen. Ranker.

“The Senate remains committed to creating and fostering a safe, inclusive workplace for everyone.

“The process to select Sen. Ranker’s successor will begin as soon as possible.”

Here’s information on the process to fill the vacancy in the 40th Legislative District:

Upon a vacancy created in a legislative office, a special meeting of the district’s party organization of the same party as the former legislator (e.g. 40th Legislative District Democrats) is called to nominate three names for consideration by the county legislative authorities contained within the Legislative District. At a special meeting, those county legislative authorities shall then choose the person to fill out the term. If the county legislative authorities do not agree on an appointment within 60 days, the Governor shall appoint a person from the list within the succeeding 30 days.
