A Guest Email Post: Stand Back Seattle

By Washington State Wire

(Editor's note: This is an informal email I received from an acquaintance of mine. Jonesy, as we call him, is a good guy but as you can see has his opinions. I thought, with his permission, I would post it up this Friday. I asked him if he cared. I can't repeat the whole answer but the translation is F---  No! Post it. He added that "Real people don't read your s--- anyway.")

Jimbo, (he calls me Jimbo)

Did you hear we're gittin' a new NBA arena?  It's an all private deal with the public contribution capped at $200 million.  Yeah, read that again real slow.   No promise of a team, of course, but I'm sure that Slade (I'm still alive) Gorton will have a talking to with David Stern about anti-trust and something will be worked out.

The Sonics left Seattle because there was no support - no sponsors, no fans, no elected officials behind them and no hope of change.  The Mayor wouldn't return Howard Schultz calls.  Nick Licata said the team contributed nothing to the region.  Members of the legislature's leadership insulted Howard Schultz in public.  And Howard had sixty crabby fellow owners (with names like Nordstrom, Sabey and other big hitters) who were getting hit with cash calls to make up for Sonics' deficits.  What's changed?

Nothing!

Mayor, County Exec and 100 plus boosters attend a news conference on LIVE television to high five a hocus pocus deal with more questions than answers.  Meanwhile, Amazon announces it is building 3,000,000 square feet of office space with its own money to house thousands of people is it going to hire.  Did Amazon even get a hat tip from the Mayor and Exec, let alone hundreds of millions in tax forgiveness?  Amazon should have gotten a ticket tape parade.

Did you read the dribble from press conference? Jimbo,I tried to go I couldn't even get in it was so crowded. How are we going to support a fourth venue when we can't even support three? And the promises, you have to read it: no costs for more cops, no costs for infrastructure, no cost to any of us short of the original $200 million loan. Sounds like the money we all put into the Key and now the city is paying for some of the bonds at that place.

This is so nuts. So here's the buster. There's no team. No team. If we get one let's call it the Seattle Meetings. That's all these pin heads do. Three years of meetings before they decide something.

Basketball. Never intended to do more than keep your legs in shape for baseball season. What a waste.
