OLYMPIA, Sept. 19.—All Olympia was agog Thursday when this photo turned up on Facebook, in emails and seemingly a thousand other forms. Honest to God, it really happened. We were there and we saw the whole thing.
Gov. Jay Inslee really did present “legislator of the year” awards to Senate Majority Leader Rodney Tom and Senate Republican Leader Mark Schoesler.
Unfortunately, we were standing far enough away that we didn’t get a chance to hear what they were saying. And that’s why we at Washington State Wire think the auspicious occasion deserves far more attention than it has already gotten — far, far more attention. So we’re running a caption contest. Go ahead, make something up. We’re offering a splendid prize.
It went down at the annual fall policy summit of the Association of Washington Business at Suncadia. Inslee had finished making a speech to the assembled crowd, and apparently someone asked him to stick around and help hand out trophies. What Inslee couldn’t have known was that AWB was going to be honoring two of his biggest political rivals. And so Inslee wound up handing out the “legislator of the year” awards to two lawmakers he had excoriated a thousand times during the session and since. At the end of the last session, you might remember, he said the Senate was controlled by “right-wing ideology;” two weeks ago he condemned the Senate for its “sins.” And let’s just say that neither Tom nor Schoesler probably figures very prominently in the guest list at the mansion.
So what do you think they were saying? What sort of caption do you think is appropriate? Surely you can come up with something better than the straight-faced line we use above. Add it to the comments below, on this page; anything we see on Facebook, we’ll add it here as well.
The prize? We have a copy of Inslee’s immortal book on green energy, ‘Apollo’s Fire,’ and while it is a used copy, we swear, it has been only slightly used.
We’ll also have an awards ceremony, if we can convince the governor to participate.
