Republican Flier Co-Opts Democratic Theme — “War on the Middle Class”

Any Other Gems Out There? -- Please, Share 'Em With Us

The front of the flier that hit 1st District mailboxes this weekend.

OLYMPIA, Aug. 4.–Here’s a man-bites dog story if there ever was one. A Republican flier in the hot race for Senate in the 1st Legislative District is taking a classic Democratic theme and using it against state Sen. Rosemary McAuliffe, D-Bothell. Did you ever expect to hear a Democrat accused of waging war on the middle class?

Flipside talks of “Rosemary McAuliffe’s war on middle-class families.”

In a flier that hit mailboxes this weekend, The Good Government Leadership Council of Centralia is standing the usual Dem argument on its head by arguing that McAuliffe’s support for her party’s tax increases makes it harder on the average Joe.  “She is waging a war on taxpaying middle-class families,” it says. “Taxpayers are losing.” And a subhead talks about “Rosemary McAuliffe’s war on middle class families.”

The Good Government Leadership Council is funded by the Leadership Council, the Senate Republicans’ soft-money PAC. Records on file at the state Public Disclosure Commission show that the latest mailing cost $9,297. Credit to campaign manager Stan Shore for one of the cleverer pieces that has crossed Washington State Wire’s desk this primary season.

And by the way, the 9th Order would like to add — if you’ve seen anything else of particular note this cycle, from either side, please, share it with us. Mailers are rather an unsung form; some are genuine masterpieces of the dark art of politics, and Washington State Wire has the rotten luck to live in Olympia’s 22nd Legislative District, where there are no contested races and the postman certainly isn’t going to be delivering any gems. But there must be plenty of you out there who, like us, wait until the last second to send in our ballots, so as to be sure we get every piece of political junk mail we’re entitled to. We have to figure the best of the best probably hit mailboxes this weekend, with the primary just days away. See something worth spotlighting? Or something that set your teeth on edge? Send scans to erik.smith@washingtonstatewire.com. Don’t worry, we’ll blank out the address and keep your identity a secret. We don’t want to get anyone dropped from a mailing list.
