Stranger Editor: Governor-Elect Inslee Has ‘Screwed Himself’ on Education Funding

Sen. Kohl-Welles (left) welcomes 36th District Democrats to her 19th Annual Post-Election Fundraiser

It was a packed and very festive house as Sen. Jeanne Kohl-Welles held her 19th Annual Post-Election Analysis Fundraiser & 11th Annual 36th District Democrats’ Silent Auction on Wednesday night. Once again she held the event at Hale’s Ales Brewery even though because of redistricting the pub is now in Sen. Ed Murray’s 43rd District.

The election analysis panel included Dominic Holden, News Editor for The Stranger, who had strong words for Governor-Elect Jay Inslee. By running on a no new taxes platform and attacking Rob McKenna for increasing taxes, Inslee “violated one of the core principles of progressives” and “screwed himself.” From Holden’s perspective education and other government programs require new funding, not just the closure of additional tax loopholes.

Holden also pointed out that the election was bad for The Stranger. With the passage of the same-sex marriage and marijuana initiatives there is “nothing left for The Stranger to complain about!”  The progressive audience loved it.

In addition to Sens. Kohl-Welles and Murray, Holden was joined on the panel by PBS travel guide Rick Steves, Rep. Reuven Carlyle, and Rep.-Elect Gael Tarleton.

Nate Miles acted as the moderator.  He explained that legalizing gay marriage on the same day as marijuana makes perfect biblical sense.  An updated translation of Leviticus 20:13 states — “A man who lies with another man should be stoned.”
